What Is a Rebel? A Conversation with Guillermo Trejo

Marc James Léger

Abstract

Ottawa-based artist Guillermo Trejo exhibited a series of prints during the May 2014 Manif d’art in Québec City. Titled BANDERAS (flags), these pieces draw from the iconography of the Zapatista movement and related struggles, fusing its symbols to that of the colour code of the Québec national flag, thereby making links between the political history of Québec and Latin America. This conversation between Trejo and Léger examines the premises, limits and possibilities of this and other works by Trejo.
